Can natural progesterone help with osteoporosis?

Studies by John Lee, M.D., indicate that natural progesterone may help osteoblast function (new bone formation), which is integral in bone rebuilding.

What results can I expect for increase in bone density using natural progesterone?

One study by a physician in California over 11 years with 100 postmenopausal women aged 38 to 83 showed that 97 of them had 5% to 40% new bone density within 6 to 48 months. Some women have attained as much as 105% of the average bone structure of a 35-year-old female. The incidence of pathological fractures dropped to zero.

May natural progesterone be used during pregnancy?

In his book PMS: Premenstrual Syndrome and You, Dr. Niels H. Lauersen, MD, from Mount Sinai Medical Center, NYC, states that natural progesterone may be helpful to maintain pregnancy. Synthetic progesterone should NOT be used because it may adversely affect the developing fetus. Dr. Lauersen says studies on offspring of women who took natural progesterone during pregnancy show they gave birth to babies who were calm, non-colicky and good nursers. If approved by your healthcare professional, natural progesterone may be used from conception to delivery, applied as a cream to the abdomen, breast, low back, and upper thighs (where it will help minimize stretching of skin). Using the cream during nursing may also aid milk production. Always consult your physician before using anything while pregnant.

Is natural progesterone suggested for women who have had a hysterectomy and/or oophorectomy?

Osteoblastosis (new bone formation) results from progesterone only. Estrogen may slow bone deteroriation (osteoclastosis), but has no part in osteoblastosis.

What do I do if I am currently on ERT or HRT?

Because different women use different amounts of estrogen and progestin in ERT (Estropgen Replacement Therapy) or HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), you should consult your health practitioner.

How quickly will I notice results?

Some people notice results immediately, and others may not notice results for two to three months. This is because if you have a progesterone deficiency, the natural progesterone will initially be absorbed by fat. When the progesterone level in the body is satisfactory, the natural progesterone will diffuse into the blood.
